HOW MUCH FOR
THAT
TRANSMITTER?
After Being asked once too often, if " I would sell my Radio" I came up with this little "Investigative Study" and
thought I would POST the results here. Russ(WB3FAU) and I have discussed this and it goes sort of like this.
Almost any "Boat-Anchor" can be fixed, assuming you can get replacement parts! The cost for Cosmetics is a
variable that depends on your taste and preferences! I am not sure if cosmetics are extremely important, except
to the perfectionist. However everyone wants their equipment to look as well as work good. So keeping that in
mind here is an observation on rebuilding a BC-610 Transmitting System and the costs involved in doing it.
First find a bargain BC-610, (difficult, but not impossible), make an offer for it or ask how much the owner wants
pay that and get the unit into your work area. We know it is "OLD" so we deal with that aspect, assume it does
not work, unless you saw it in operation before pick-up, made power measurements and things like that. OK
here goes.
What you have so far is a large hunk of "IRON" did it have tubes in it? If not then start adding to the cost of this
piece of iron. Expect to pay around $500.00 for this hunk of iron. Then there is the cost to get it home, does it
involve shipping? If so that is around $150.00 to $300.00 depending on who you "FIND" to pack and ship it
for you. If you are picking it up, total up your travel time, gas costs, food costs (need your strength) how far
away is it will you need a room? Hotel/Motel costs go in the total.
Alrighty-then, you have the thing in your work area. No tubes or questionable tubes, I always try to eliminate
unknowns first so I use "New" or as they say new old stock tubes, that I have tested and found to be working.
OK, so for your "Beastly-610" you will need the following:
1) 250TH PA tube ($175.00)
2) 807 IPA tubes ($12.00 ea)
3) 0D3 voltage regulators ($4.00 ea)
1) 6V6GT oscillator tube ($11.00+) I don't know what the plus is
1) 6L6 (Metal) buffer/amplifier tube ($25.00+) Ditto
2) 5Z3 rectifier tubes ($19.00 ea)
2) 2A3 triodes (audio drivers) ($55.00+ ea) Ditto
2) 100TH modulator tubes ($175.00 ea)
2) 3B28 H.V. rectifier tubes ($13.00 ea)
THE GRAND TOTAL less Shipping cost = $761.00 this is not a FIRM cost (might be more!)
First we go to a
"Reputable Dealer"
in old tubes, in this case:

Ok, now you have tubes, maybe. What about the coils and tuning units any available? Most folks that have them
and DON'T want them still want $15.00 each for the coils, (hey you can't get porcelin like this anymore), and as
for the tuning units expect to pay as little as $10.00 and as much as $30.00 if you can find someone that hasn't
removed parts from them. It has been my experience that the price goes up if you ask for a specific item!
I monitor several listservers and spotted this message. Just to give you a feel for what some folks think their
BC-610(*) units are worth:
Greetings to all,
I just opened the crate and removed the last of my crated BC-610's.
This one was originally an "F" model that was converted in 1966 to a
T-213/GRC26. From the enclosed paperwork, it appears that this case has not
been opened since that date. It is different from the other T-213's that I
have had in that the balanced feed line connectors were not removed in the
conversion/re-nomenclature. This transmitter will clean up to be an
extremely nice BC-610/T-213. I will sell it as is, or cleaned up and
operating complete with a full set of good coils, tuning units and original
power/interconnecting cables. As is, complete $2,500. Cleaned and tested,
$3,500. Will consider delivery anywhere in the original 48 for cost of
gasoline.
I have another T-213 that I have been operating for the last few
years. It is different from the one above in that the front panel is hand
lettered and the balanced feed has been removed. This is a very clean, good
working transmitter. I will sell it as a complete, operating set for $2,000
and will consider similar delivery options.
I have one extremely nice "E" model as a complete set, $2,500. I
have a couple of working, fixer-uppers that I will sell in the $700 to
$1,000, depending upon options.
